I have never written a review before, but I have been listening to books since before Audible was hatched. I have noticed readers voices before, but never really been put off by one.
This book had me wondering if it was read by a machine, initially. After getting hooked on Wizard's First Rule, I dove into this book only to be highly frustrated by the reader's voice and inflections. I will likely abandon the Audible copy to read it - I hope you have a different experience.
I will actively avoid anything read by this narrator. Because there is no way, I can put up with this narrator for a moment longer, and that is a first for me. I tried, I really did, becuase I was interested in the future adventures of Richard Cypher and crew, but the way this man talks reminds me of a computer generated voice, and I just can not get over it, and boy did I try. The sad thing is I am not a picky person. Hence why I got this even after all the warnings, in all the other reviews.
I figured I could handle it I just never figured on how bad it truly was. I love the series. The book is awesome, but I don't know why they couldn't bring back Sam Tsoutsouvas to do the narration. I got used to his inflections, and he seemed to be really into the story. This guy seems like he is just reading words off of the paper; sometimes it appears it's the first time he has seen the words.
Where was the director? The worst part? Sam Tsoutsouvas gave a great voice to Zed. Jim Bond turned him Irish for some reason. Anyways, the story is still great, and if you can ignore the narration and just listen to the story for what it is, it's still a decent purchase. I loved book one, but I will never again purchase or listen to an audiobook narated by Jim Bond.
I was so eager to continue with the series that I immediately downloaded the second book. Unfortunately the narrator is not as good as the one who read the first book in the series. I'm only one hour in and I'm hoping it will improve but so far the narrator can not maintain a consistent accent for the character's voices and it has become a distraction.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will get better. The story is very well written but horribly read. When I first started listening I thought something was wrong with my speakers. The narrator drones on and on. I have difficulty telling male voices from female voices. Richard's voice makes me think of John Wayne and the Mudpeople are depicted as native sometimes robotic, like they are speaking broken english, though they are in fact speaking in there own language and then being translated by Kahlan.
I am disappointed to learn this narrator is used again in this series. His lack of emotion and pathetic attempt of the characters makes it a very hard story to follow. The story is very similar to WoT.
But this narrator is no Michael Kramer. Jim Bond should keep to narrating westerns and mystery novels, keeping "The Duke" out of the middle ages.
If the many other narrators are as horrible as Mr. Bond, it's a good thing I have the series in hardcover But as you can tell from my review, I am unable to enjoy this epic fantasy narrated by a man better suited for the westerns, mysteries and boring self help instruction books, he is better known for narrating. I never occurred to me that they would have changed readers.
I quite enjoyed the first reader. He brought an added dimension to the novel. I was expecting to hear him when I hit play and found myself extremely disappointed. I keep hoping that Jim Bond will improve. But after over 2 hours his voices remain a mixture of indistinguishable or unnatural. His reading of the narration is stilted at best. I really wish I'd checked the reviews before buying this book.
I will force myself to finish listening because the story is actually interesting. I wish all of the publishers of audio books took the care in hiring their readers that Recorded Books does. Their stable of readers is consistently the best I've encountered. I can't take it I quit listening. This Narrator's reading would make a great SNL skit!
Is this guy immitating a text to speach program? I have never stopped listening to an audio book because of the narrater Until now. OMG is this guy terrible. Run away, spare yourself the torment and money, buy the book if you must, but this narrator is all time worst. How much does this gig pay If he is any indication of necessary talent I may have second career. He pro-nounces-every word as if he were reading to a 4 year old It felt as if it was narrated by a Speak-n-Spell.
I would have given this book a 4 stars if it was someone like Sam Tsoutsouvas, Gerard Doyle or even John Lee who had narrated it. But Jim Bond made it almost insufferable. Sorry, won't be buying any more narrated by mister Bond, Jim Bond. I listened to about 20 minutes.. Putting it down right away! WoT is what I listened to last summer, and then the Gunslinger the summer before that. Not to mention Lian hearn etc.. All had great readers, this one here I just can't jump on.
And I noticed that there are many different readers for this series. No fun at all to re-learn the characters through every book. Also very similar to WoT. Richard is entertaining but Mat and Perrin and Rand are much more interesting. I'm moving on to something else. I find it very important to have readers that sound very similar. Sorry guys. If you enjoyed wizards first rule then you'll enjoy this follow up story in the series.
But seriously consider reading the story instead of listening to it. There's a change of narrator, this is a bit jarring at first but ordinarily you could get used to it after a chapter or too Dune changes narrator frequently and it's fine after a while. This narrator however is beyond terrible. He had a horrific, wooden voice and doesn't seem to have learnt how sentences are spoken.
He pauses all over the place and never reads a sentence in full, his tones of voice used to represent certain characters are extremely off puting and don't seem to match the characters Zed is particularly bad, Darken Rahl also ridiculous. Thankfully they seem to have a new narrator for book 3. This is a brilliant book, the strongest in the series in my opinion, but the only person to enjoy this narration would be someone addicted to text-talk handsets. How did the narrator detract from the book?

But after this i think ill go buy the hard copy cuz for as bad as i want listen to it i cant with this guy. Gonna choose to go pick up a book and read for the first time in my life. The dude read the book like a robot. It detracted from the book for me. Please, republish this brilliant book with another narrator!! I see some people blaming the narrator giving his best work on a this book. This book is not without so many flaws.
The plot does not really get started until Richard gets to the Palace. In so many ways, the story feels like it is treading water until we see that magic school life. For those that love magic schools but dislike Harry Potter, this can be a good alternative, but so would the Poppy Wars and without a doubt, The Name of the Wind.
There's so many beat in here that are somewhat repetitive of the previous installment. As such, any fan should be warned about that. These are some of Goodkind's larger works, but by no means is it more dense. There is some wonderful setup for later installments that will be useful but for me, this is a fond memory, but a reread can be a little rough as there are parts that are definitely worth skipping.
