Brazilian Butt Lift has been described by many, but there is no definitive resource or book that details the procedure as performed by Brazilian Plastic Surgeons.

The editors conducted a recent survey among the members of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgeons SBCP and have seen that there are many differences in approach, style, technique, and even materials used between what is being done around the world and what is being done in Brazil.

While addressing recent media attention and scares, this book features contributions from world renowned Brazilian and international Plastic Surgeons addressing the high morbidity and mortality recently reported and establish tried and true safety protocols.

To increase the scope of the book, differing views of techniques and methods are also included, making this a truly global book covering the specific gluteal region. Gluteal Fat Augmentation: Best Practices in Brazilian Butt Lift will open with the history of the procedure, go through the anatomy and the ethnic aspects of the aesthetics of the gluteal region.

The book features special chapters on gluteal fat augmentation and a wide variety of techniques to improve the gluteal contour. A wealth of images accompany the text to fully illustrate the different approaches and techniques of gluteal fat augmentation, reshaping, and contouring including the use of fillers, implants, lift, and correction of depressions and deformities of the region. Written for practicing plastic surgeons, this book is poised to become the go-to reference for cosmetic and reconstructive concerns surrounding the gluteal region.

This issue of Clinics in Plastic Surgery, guest edited by Drs. Robert F. Centeno and Constantino G. Mendieta, is devoted to Gluteal Augmentation. Liposuction is currently the number one aesthetic surgical procedure performed by plastic surgeons in the United States and Americans spend more money on liposuction than on any other aesthetic surgical procedure.

Current ultrasonic liposuction devices are significantly different than the previous generations and require a certain level of technical expertise in order to achieve good outcomes with the technique.

Although there are chapters devoted to the technique in general body contouring textbooks, there are no current textbooks that fully cover this important technique. The text is divided into three distinct sections for ease of use.

Section I: Fundamentals will cover basic techniques and safe use of the devices for plastic surgeons looking to add ultrasound-assisted liposuction to their practice. Section II: Clinical Applications explores use of the devices for commonly performed surgeries, including facial, trunk, extremity arm and leg , and buttock contouring as well as gynecomastia. Section III: Special Applications takes a focused look at the VASER device and its use in more complicated situations, with chapters handling silicone injection complications and contouring in a massive weight loss patient.

Featuring contributions from leaders in the field, alongside full color photos and a special introductory video, Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction serves as a reference for surgeons currently using ultrasonic techniques in liposuction and those looking to get started.

This text provides a comprehensive overview of operative dictations in plastic, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgical procedures, which will serve as a valuable resource for residents, fellows, and practicing surgeons. The book provides step-by-step operative details regarding all indexed plastic surgery cases that a resident is expected to be thoroughly acquainted with for his or her daily practice and examinations.

Each case is preceded by a list of common indications, covering most of the situations in which particular procedures will be used, as well as a list of essential steps. Operative Dictations in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery will serve as a very useful resource for physicians dealing with, and interested in the field of plastic surgery.

It will also provide the related data for the newly minted practicing plastic surgeons. All chapters are written by authorities in their fields and include the most up-to-date scientific and clinical information.

Over the past decades, surgical techniques have greatly progressed to improve and correct appearance. They are artistic procedures to give the highly demanded proportions.

The growing public interest in aesthetic and plastic surgery interventions such as body contouring and sculpting requires clear description and differentiation of these highly sophisticated techniques, their results and combinations, as well as scientific information about the different instrumentation, devices and materials used.

Such clarification will be hugely beneficial both for patients and doctors, having in mind the increasing number of such interventions and progressing interest for a better and healthy living including improved appearance in society.

The book adds some scientific news to the understanding of body contouring treatments. Currently, the request for atraumatic, short downtime procedures predominates and demonstrates the importance of hi-tech and safe liposculpture and fat transfer, although they cannot totally replace surgical excision methods.

This book covers all aspects of body contouring with silicone implants with the exception of breast augmentation. Potential complications are identified for each of the procedures and clear guidance is provided on how to avoid them. The book will enable the surgeon to gain a sound understanding of the different body sculpting techniques and when they are applicable. To his credit, the author is very forthright in describing a large number of complications with gluteal implants and states that he has been progressively relying more on fat grafting. He mentions the few articles that detail the incidence of complications with gluteal implants. Although this is an operation known to have more complications as compared with other cosmetic procedures, they are mostly related to wound healing and infection.

These complications can be dramatic but are usually not life threatening. Also, when the author describes his harvesting technique in Part 2 of the book, several details reflect his experience rather than facts based on research. This might be expected in a book where the author shares his personal techniques; however, some of the assertions would benefit from scientific support, especially in the section that addresses methods for avoiding complications.

It is important to note that some but not all of the assertions are fully supported by the literature. In terms of organization, it is not always easy to follow the relationship of the images to the text, as there are no legends.

I do agree that in some cases, legends would be redundant, but they would have been of benefit in many other instances. This is a very good book with a detailed view of gluteal anatomy and landmarks described by a plastic surgeon not by an anatomist. The author is to be commended for his huge effort to synthesize so many thoughts about the gluteal anatomic units as an aid to diagnosis for plastic surgeons and his thorough discussion of all available techniques in an up-to-date fashion.

The author declared no potential conflicts of interest with respect to the research, authorship, and publication of this article. Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford.
